Cranberry Liqueur

Homemade for the Holidays

Cranberry Liqueur

Cranberry liqueur makes an impressive holiday gift.  That color.  So beautiful.  So vibrant.  Now is the perfect time to make this festive sipper.  Fresh cranberries are abundant.  Load up your freezer when they are on sale and you will have a stash at the ready for when your liqueur starts to run low.  I always have a bottle in my freezer for when the craving hits.

And if you cheat a bit on the three weeks of sitting on the shelf time, you could even serve it at your Thanksgiving feast.  It will still taste fantastic and no one will be the wiser.

The color is stunning and the taste is even better.  Mixed with something sparkling and bubbly, it makes a great brunch beverage.  I would choose champagne  🙂 , but cava, prosecco or even sparkling water would be wonderful.  It would also make a great topping over fruit or ice cream.

Cranberry Liqueur-Cranberries in a bottle of vodka

I gave this as a gift one year along with chocolate liqueur and coffee liqueur.  The trio looked fantastic in glass bottles along with recipes for how to use them.   A bottle of Limoncello would also make a great companion gift.

Packaged in small bottles, it would make a perfect stocking stuffer.  One of the best stocking stuffers I received was a small bottle of orange juice, a small bottle of sparkling wine and a champagne glass.  I enjoyed it while opening gifts on Christmas morning.  What a great start to the day.  Thank you Santa Claus .   Do the same thing with this and watch someone’s face light up on Christmas morning.

This is definitely the gift to give if you want to wow your party hosts!

When you strain the liqueur you will have leftover bits of cranberry. Don’t toss them!  I will be posting a recipe soon that will use them.  Store them in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Cranberry liqueur is not something that can be whipped up overnight so don’t dilly dally.  Go now.  Run to the store and snatch up bags of cranberries before they’re gone.  Time’s a wastin’.  What are you waiting for?  GO NOW!

Prep Time

  1. 2 cups sugar
  2. 1 cup water
  3. 1 (12-ounce) package fresh cranberries
  4. 3 cups vodka
  1. Combine the sugar and water in a large saucepan. Cook, stirring constantly, over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the pan from the heat and cool completely.
  3. Wash the cranberries and place in the bowl of a food processor. Process until finely chopped, about two minutes.
  4. Add the cranberries to the cooled sugar water mixture in the pan. Stir in the vodka.
  5. Pour the cranberry vodka mixture into an empty vodka bottle or desired container.
  6. Let the mixture sit for 3 weeks in a cool, dark place, shaking every other day.
  7. After the 3 weeks, strain the cranberry mixture through a cheesecloth-lined colander into a bowl. Discard the solids or set aside for another use.
  8. Carefully pour the liqueur into desired containers.
  9. Store in the refrigerator or freezer.
  1. Makes about 4 1/2 cups.
  2. Times listed do not include three weeks of sitting time.
  3. I save the chopped up cranberries for another baking project.
  4. I usually fill my bottles in the sink because it can get messy.
  5. Drink chilled by itself, mixed with sparkling wine or water, or use as a topping for fruit or ice cream.
  6. Store the liqueur in the refrigerator or freezer. It will keep for year, if it lasts that long!
